Laser Soldering Method

2019.8.19

Laser soldering, a new soldering method which is expected to replace the wave soldering and reflow soldering is receiving more attention. Laser soldering is a "local heating" which heats only the targeted area and it is a "non-contact" heating unlike the wave soldering or soldering iron. This avoids thermal damage to surrounding components which are not heat resistant. For example, small camera module requires highly precise optical axis accuracy; however, reflow soldering's temperature and its thermal energy ruins the optical axis and deteriorates the performance. However, by heating the targeted spot by laser, such difficulty can be overcome. In this technical memo, we will discuss difference between laser soldering and existing soldering technologies and introduce KOKI solder paste for laser soldering, S3X58-M330D.
